Hold On - by subseven

Oh, how I wish some bands didn't have to break up...
subseven is from Weatherford, OK.  They formed in 1999, & remained independent for 4 years, & in that time, they released 2 EP's: "The Black Album" in 2000, & "Larusso EP" the subsequent year.  They signed with Flicker Records, where they release "subseven: the EP" in 2004 with producer Bob Burch (Number One Gun, Olivia the Band).  In an interview, the band explained the meaning of their name:
"subseven is two words. Basically, 'sub' is short for submitted & 'seven' is God's number, & the name just means submitted to God"*
Since their inception, they've played with the likes of Project 86, Pillar, Falling Up, Disciple, & even Stryper.  But their next & final release came out in 2005, also on Flicker Records.  Their final show was on December 3rd, where they "recorded the video for 'Hold On' at OKC's the Green Door; after the video shoot the band announced that they were calling it quits. They played their last show that night"**.  This song is from that album, called "Free to Conquer".

Independence Day for a Petty Thief - by House of Heroes

So I know Independence Day is long over, but I was listening to this song earlier & I'm like: "I'm loving this right now".  Enjoy. :)
(& again, I've stuff to do, so I'm going to post what I had from Feb, except revised)...
House of Heroes is from Hilliard, OH.  They've been influenced by the likes of "Bruce Springsteen & Tom Petty, The Who, E.L.O. with a touch of Meatloaf"*.  They've toured with such artists as tobyMac, Skillet, Seabird, Family Force 5, & have performed at the Purple Door & Creation Festivals (& of course more).  Their first release ("What You Want is Now" [Vanishing Point]) as House of Heroes came in 2003, but only after a name change & album as No Tagbacks.  4 more LP's have been released since, plus an acoustic EP & also a Beatles cover EP.  This song is from "Suburba", released Aug. 3rd, 2010 on Gotee Records.
Note: this video also contains the ending from the previous track on the album, "Salt in the Sea".  "Independence Day for..." actually begins at 33 seconds...

Everything's Different - by Mosquito Fleet

So, I'm likely to not be doing posts like what was normal for some time 'cause I've work & reading to do.  Yay for mandatory gen. ed. courses.

But aside from that, this is some great music.
Mosquito Fleet is based out of Marion, IN.  They've released a debut album called "All Those Who Wander Are Not Lost" [ind.] in March 2010; followed by their latest "Swings & Cloves EP" [ind.] on Jan. 11th, 2011.  & for some fun trivia: in an [e-mail] interview*, Josh Yoshonis (lead voc's, rhythm guitar) described their worst touring experience..:
"
Probably the worst point of that string of shows was driving from Marion to a venue in Detroit, sound checking, walking out to play only to find the room completely empty & having the venue owner come up & tell us the show was canceled.  No questions asked, no compensation (we learned to make contracts with venues after that), & some very poor manners. So we sucked it up, loaded up our equipment, & drove straight to Chicago for our next show. I should note that Phil drove the whole trip, which was insane. He was a trooper. Also, before we left Detroit, Alex (lead guitar) weaseled his way into some free Dunkin Donuts for us all which made everything a little bit better. :)
"
This song is from their "Swings & Cloves EP".
http://mosquitofleet.bandcamp.com/

Also, as mentioned in the previous post (just below here), you can get all the music they've released for FREE, but only until this FRIDAY, Sept. the 30th, 2011 (see below for details about it...).  Available on their BandCamp page listed above.

Just a few more details about the album available (for FREE if you wish, I might add) on October 4th.

2nd: Only until FRIDAY - Mosquito Fleet has made all their music available for FREE.  But again, only until this Friday, Sept. 30th, 2011.  Here's what they posted on Facebook a few hours ago:
"
After taking most of the summer off from playing to adjust to some new life transitions for each of us, we are so excited to be playing in Marion, IN this Friday!...
In light of that, we are giving ALL of our music away for free at http://mosquitofleet.bandcamp.com/ until the show on Friday.
Help us get our music out to anyone who doesn't have it! Post the link on your friends' walls, tweet it, email it, whatever!
We love you guys and can't wait to see you this Friday
"
(Stop.)  ;)

So, you read the message - go get it!  Their latest EP "Swings & Cloves" contains what may be my favourite rendition of "Come Thou Fount of Ev'ry Blessing" ever.

Enjoy!

By the way:

2 things I'm really excited for (& have marked down in various places...)

2) Holding Onto Hope is again releasing their next album on Come&Live Records, which means that it's absolutely FREE (or donation, if you choose so).  Their new & self-titled album will be available Tues. Oct. 4th, 2011 on Come&Live.
You can get their previous album there, too.
http://www.comeandlive.com/CLD/HoldingOntoHope/index.html <-- "Of the Sea" for completely FREE
& here's two of their songs I would suggest looking up, & pretty much shows you the spectrum they play:
"We Are the Beacons" - screamed words with haunting melodies & entrancing guitars...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBvKpGPUu0Y
"What You Make of Me" - amazingly beautiful low key song that makes your heart yearn...

White Light - by Vinyl Thief

So excited to hear more of this new stuff.
But again, stuff to do, & sleep to be slept, so just a quick blurb I have here:
Vinyl Thief is based out of Nashville, TN.  They released their first material as Vinyl Thief in 2010 in the EP "Control".  They've been working on new material lately, & have now pre-released their song "White Light" to those on their mailing (hint: you should join).  This song is... well, it just is.

Dark Horses - by Switchfoot

I'm not going to post like normal 'cause I've homework & lotsa reading to do.
So:
This music video for the new album "Vice Verses" (which hits the shelves Sept. 27th, 2011) was released just a couple days ago.

Thursday, September 22, 2011

Good News:

Actually, great news:
Sounds like Red Umbrella is going to release another album!  They posted a picture with the caption "Can't wait to share our new record!" about an hour ago on their Facebook page.
Just wanted to share that with you.

Also:
Mutemath premiered their new music video for their single "Blood Pressure" on MTV today.  ...  I wish I could say something about it, but I can't because I'm not in the right region, apparently.  MTV seems to not like sharing content with Canada; lol.

That's all.

Crash and Burn - by Hundred Year Storm

Wishing they came back again like they did 2 years ago...
Hundred Year Storm is from Austin, TX.  They formed in 2003, & their self-titled debuting EP came in Nov. 2004 on Jacket Weather Records.  Two more LP's came, both in 2006 & both on different labels: "Hello From the Children of Planet Earth" on Floodgate Records; then "Only When It's Dark Enough Can You See the Stars" on Northern.  Following a total of 400 shows in 3 years from 2004 through 2007, they took a 2 year hiatus, but returned in 2009 with "The Future Belongs to the Brave" on Doll House Recordings.  Sadly, I cannot find anything left of the band.  This song is from "Hello From the Children of Planet Earth".
http://www.purevolume.com/hundredyearstorm <-- it's the third on the playlist

Also: you can download "Crash and Burn" & "Mental" (both from "Hello From the...") for FREE on the PureVolume page listed above.

Dog Like Vultures - by Haste the Day

Just thinking of a couple things I've been reading lately - 'The Last Battle' by C.S. Lewis, & my psychology textbook, & some news stories; this song rings truer than before...
Haste the Day is from Indianapolis, IN.  They formed in 2001, starting out as a 3-piece (bassist Mike Murphy, drummer Devin Chaulk, & guitarist Brennan Chaulk) but added 2 more (guitarist Jason Barnes & lead vocalist Jimmy Ryan) in the year to follow.  The name 'Haste the Day' comes from the 1870's hymn "It Is Well With My Soul" written by Horatio Spafford, in which a verse contains "Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight"*.  In the summer of 2002, they independently released their debut EP "That They May Know You"; & not too long after, they were signed to one of Tooth & Nail's subsidiaries, Solid State Records.  They've since released 5 LP's, underwent some major lineup changes, (somewhere in between the 5 releases mentioned), released a 3 album anthology, & broke up.  In November of 2010, they announced that they were breaking up; their farewell tour followed in Feb. & March 2011, but they released one last album: a live album recorded in Indiana on June 29th, 2010 featuring the original & final line-up of the band.  This song is from "Attack of the Wolf King" [Solid State], released on June 29th, 2010.

* - I know this is kinda irrelevant to "Dog Like Vultures", but this is one of my favourite versions of "It Is Well" - performed by The Frozen Ocean

Causin' a Commotion - by Greg Sczebel

The Maple Noise concert was awesome last night.  In addition: he now has a new fan.
Greg Sczebel was born Sept. 6th, 1984, & he is from Salmon Arm, BC.  He's been singing since he "was little; since [he] could barely talk"*; time passed, he learned piano at 12, & as he sang at weddings, karaoke, etc., he decided he would step out & 'go for it'.  Sczebel released his debut album "Here to Stay" [Soultone] in 2004 in addition to his win in the Gospel category for the John Lennon Songwriting Contest. Included in his growing collection of awards is the Juno's Contemporary Christian/Gospel Album of the Year for both 2005 for "Here to Stay" & 2011 for his latest release "Love & the Lack Thereof" [Soultone]; he's also gathered a number of other nominations & plus a number of wins in the GMA Covenant Awards including Male Vocalist of the Year (2004 & 2010) & Urban Song of the Year (for "Everybody" in 2005).  Currently, he's touring with Every Eye Media's Maple Noise Tour featuring acts such as Manafest, TFK, To Tell, Jodi King, & the Newsboys.  This song is from "Love & the Lack Thereof".

The Generous Mr. Lovewell - by MercyMe

Awesome song & band.  Fun little video they did for the song too...
MercyMe is based out of Dallas, TX.  The band name itself came from lead singer Bart Millard's grandmother, who would occasionally call & ask what he was up to; he would sarcastically say "Well, I'm trying to chalk off the next year to spend time finding a band name."
"& she said, 'Well mercy me, why don't you get a real job?' I [Millard] thought, 'Wait a minute. That's the perfect name.' That kind of freed up my year but that's where the name came from."*
The sextet started in the mid 90's as a smaller band, & they independently released their first, an LP "Pleased to Meet You" in 1995.  The band was the complete 6 piece they are now before their major label release "Almost There" on INO Records in 2001, & have since had more than a dozen releases including Christmas, acoustic, & special additions.  Their newest project is "The Worship Sessions", released Aug. 30th, 2011 - it's an album exclusive to Family Christian Stores.  This song comes from their 2010 LP "The Generous Mr. Lovewell", which made it to #3 on Billboard's top 200 & is currently at #54.  The 'Mr. Lovewell' mentioned is "an idea... a movement. He's the hope that the little things can add up to a big change. He's what the Bible has already called us to do... love one another"**.
This video was released just today, & is an "Officially Un-official Music Video".

Savannah - by Relient K

I'm becoming more & more of a fan of their music over time.  If time & money allows, I may start hunting down the rest of their discography that I don't yet have...
Relient K is from Canton, OH.  Their first gig, as described on their website*, was in Dec. 1997; "back when Matthew Thiessen (voc's) & guitarist Matt Hoopes were still in high school & tooling around in the latter's Plymouth Reliant K, which inspired the band's name".  Their demo "All Work & No Play" came within a year's time, produced by Mark Lee Townsend who was known beforehand as the guitarist for dc Talk (& has stuck with them, still producing their music).  The demo caught the ears of dc Talk's Toby McKeehan, aka tobyMac, & he signed Relient K to Gotee Records.  A preview EP ("2000 A.D.D. EP"[2000]) came, before their self-titled label LP debuted also in 2000.  Since then, they've released a score of EP's & LP's, their latest LP being "Forget and Not Slow Down" [2009]; it was their 6th official LP, & also their first release on Mono vs. Stereo Records, which is an imprint label of Gotee Records.  They have a cover album called "K is for Karaoke" set to be released Oct. 4th, 2011.  This song is from "Forget and Not Slow Down".

Also, you can download their song "The Scene & Herd" from their b-sides album "The Birds & the B-Sides" [2008] for FREE off Gotee's website; all that's required is an e-mail address & being alright with receiving occasional updates from the label.

A Perfect Voice - by The Classic Crime

Just got their latest "Vagabonds" yesterday; & I am, of course, enjoying it.
TCC is based out of Seattle, WA.  The 5-piece band began in 2004, & released a demo EP, "We All Look Elsewhere" [ind.] in 2004.  Their signing to Tooth & Nail Records spawned their debut LP "Albatross" [2006]; then their "Acoustic EP: Seattle Sessions" [2007], which came about while touring in support of the LP.  "The Silver Cord" was released in 2008, also on T&N Records.  To which: the term 'silver cord' is the idea of a 'silver cord' that keeps the spirit attached to the body, & when one dies & the spirit leaves the body, the cord stretches & becomes thinner & thinner until it is severed; appropriately, a lot of this album deals with struggles, & some of life & death.  In the first week of the release of "The Silver Cord", exactly 5805 records were sold, which, as they noted, is the title of a song on the record, & is also the number of the house where they began their musical journey*.  Their latest release, "Vagabonds" [2010], was the last one on T&N Records, as they have now departed, & are working on another album to be released in 2012.  This song is from "Vagabonds".

Wichita Lineman - written by Jimmy Webb (performed by many)

For today, I want to draw attention to the original recording, by Glen Campbell from 1968;
& Johnny Cash's cover - in lieu of the 8 years since his passing.
But about the writer:
Jimmy Webb was born Aug. 15th, 1946 in Elk City, OK.  Learning piano & organ by age 12, he began playing in the choir at his father's churches (his father - Robert Lee Webb - was a Baptist minister; & also a former member of U.S. Marine Corps).  Long story short, he remained in California when his father moved back to Oklahoma; Jimmy was almost 20.  During the 60's, & over the duration of 20 months, he wrote 5 top 10 hits.  Throughout the rest of his career, he wrote hit songs for the likes of Glen Campbell, Richard Harris, Joe Cocker, the Fifth Dimension, & more.  Jimmy Webb has been inducted into multiple hall of fame's & won, in 1993, the National Academy of Songwriter's Lifetime Achievement Award.  This song, inspired from him actually seeing a lineman working in Wichita, KS, was is listed as #195 in Rolling Stone magazine's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.  It was written in 1968.

Remember the Day - by Steven Curtis Chapman ...

In honour of those lost but always remembered, from the 9/11 attacks in 2001.
http://911digitalarchive.org/

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7b2ZTlWiOg (<-- The Skit Guys on 9/11 & remembering)

I remember when I first heard - it was the end of the school day (I was in public school where many of the kids would've been too young to understand yet), getting ready to head home on the bus when our bus driver asked us to be quiet, stating along the lines of something (I didn't know exactly what he was talking about at the time...) being the biggest terrorist attack.  Roughly 45 minutes later, I arrived home where Mom asked if I wanted to know what was going on; I did.  She showed me, & I will never forget.
But - I do just want to say - let us remember, & remember the love we can live, & the lives we choose.  As Alan Jackson sings in "Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)": "Faith, Hope, & Love are some good things He gave us; & the greatest is Love".

This song was written for the 10th anniversary of the day.

Timebomb - by States

New album coming Oct. 18th - watch for it!
States is based in… the States… more specifically: Nashville, TN.  They formed in 2010 after Mindy White left her previous band, Lydia.  Backtracking to 2009, the band Copeland - who's albums & songs made it into Billboard's charts on multiple occasions & with whom the band Lydia had toured with before - broke up (not a 'bitter break up', by any means).  The result was guitarist Stephen Laurenson, guitarist/pianist Bryan Laurenson, drummer Jonathan Bucklew - all from Copeland - & Dean Lorenz joining with Mindy White (voc's) to form States*.  On Oct. 12th, 2010, they independently released their "Line 'Em Up" EP, & on Oct. 18th, 2011, they are releasing the full-length "Room to Run"; &, to my knowledge, they worked with acclaimed producer Aaron Sprinkle (Thousand Foot Krutch; Anberlin; Poema; The Almost; …) for the album.  This song is from "Room to Run".

* - I can't find what all their specific jobs are in States, but there is 3 key members (Stephen, Bryan & Mindy) - I suspect the others are more for tours (as they are listed on their Facebook page)…..?

Also, if you wish, you can go to their website & go through their news posts (clikc "Previous Entry") until you find the one from Dec. 24th, 2010, & you can download (for free of course) an acoustic version of "Another Chapter" from their EP "Line 'Em Up".

Song For You - by Jenny & Tyler

Because it's late & there's other things to do, I'm just going to post what I did last time...
Which concerns..: A husband-wife duo with awesome music..
Jenny & Tyler are based out of Nashville, TN (but where it all started, as they say, was at the University of Delaware where they met).  In Dec. 2007, they released the LP "A Prelude".  The following year, they moved to Nashville & then quit their day jobs & released "This isn't a Dream" in April of '09.  Since then, they've done much touring & released "Love Came Down: A Christmas EP" in Dec. '09, then their latest LP -  "Faint Not"; released Nov. of 2010.  This song is from "Faint Not".

Beautiful - by UnNamed Servant

I was craving something kinda happy sounding.  Then I remembered I have this (for FREE, too - Noisetrade is a very wonderful & very legal site).
UnNamed Servant (often abbreviated 'US') is based out of Nashville, TN.  US formed in May of 2001, & they've released 4 studio albums in addition to touring abroad, with dates in India, Kenya, Uganda (to which, a recent tour [that is, just a few months ago] in Uganda resulted in a road side accident; all are recovering & moving forward) & even in the Philippines..  They're heavily involved in "serving the poor in developing countries through education, healthcare, & social work. 100% of US earnings goes directly to this work"*.  UnNamed Servant is currently working on getting a studio - Center Street Studios - up & running in Nashville; & have plans to bring forth "the best US yet"**.  This song is from their Aug. 2010 album "Invitation to Exile".

The Hawk in Paris (the band, not the album...)

(... & though the band name is inspired by the 1956 album by Coleman Hawkins, that release is not the one I mean to talk about...)

The Hawk in Paris has their debut EP "His+Hers" available for FREE, but not for long.  It's on Noisetrade.com & after the deadline, there will only be a 3 song sampler.  But the EP is free in its entirety for roughly 22 hours more.

The Hawk in Paris is Dan Haseltine (yes, lead singer for Jars of Clay), Jeremy Bose (a composer & programmer who has worked alongside Point of Grace, Steven Curtis Chapman, & other notable artists), & Matt Bronleewe (a former Jars of Clay member).  The project is a group of friends doing what's outside of their norm in terms of what they currently do in music.

Golden Eyes - by Kingslynn

Sorry for missing the past couple days; I've been busy with the move back to the city for college & so haven't been looking at this.  But here's another song for you...
... that is, an awesome song that I never realized was awesome until the other day.
Kingslynn is from Miami, FL.  The independent four-piece consists of bassist Michael Blanco, singer Evelyn Grace, Danny Guaisco on guitars, and drummer David Molina who also does the programming; though, soon enough, it will be singer Evelyn Blanco as the band recently announced her & Michael's engagement (& if by chance you read this: Congrats!).  In terms of releses, they have a song on iTunes called "The State", available for purchase as of Sept. 14th, 2010.  Lately, they've been advertising for an EP that they currently have planned to be released no later than October 2011.  This song is a singly they released earlier this year.
